Then that attempt failed, it retired without fighting

to a more defensible position at Ho Yuen on the East

River. Following the defeat of the Kwangsi army on

the North River, when a detachment sent from Ho Yuen

across country again arrived too late to be of assistance,

it found itself confronted by superior numbers and

withdrew to Swatow and thence, is the pursuing forces

approached, to the borders of Fukien and Southern Kiangsi,

the mountainous region which has so long given shelter to the communist brigands of Chü Tak and Lo Chak-tung

Meanwhile the officials of the Kwangsi regime at swatow

came to Hong Kong on 12th June travelling by the Japanese Coasting Steamer "Hozan Karu". They brought with them

a quantity of issued and unissued bank notes of the

Swatow branch of the Central Bank, which they deposited in a Chinese Bank in Hong Kong, managed by adherents of th

Kwangsi clique.

4. On the 14th June. I received a visit from r. Yee Sheng L.C. Tao (To Lei Kim), who had taken up the post of Commissioner of Foreign Affairs at Canton

on the 7th June. r. Tao is a native of Kwangtung,

though he has spent the greater part of his life away from his province. He has been Chargé d'affaires in Mexico and has held an official position at Peking and later at Nanking. His command of English is or and he was accompanied by his private secretary who acted as his interpreter. His attitude was friendly and he appears to be genuinely desirous of maintaining good relations between Hong Kong and Canton.
